Deficits and Military Spending

Just a quick post on war and economics.

Southern Beale wrotethis concerning the truth about some deficit hawks.

And try reading the full article concerning World Military spending. here
The article is both textual and visual, full of charts. This is an updated article and is one you may want to read and re-read. (I find I must read it in pieces to get full value from it. Getting old ya know.)

Now, tell me why am I cynical.

  1. There is a lot of good information in that site that you linked to. I don't understand how anyone could not be cynical with what is going on. I do think that bad economic times leads to war and that must be why the world is spending so much on military instead of peace. Further down in that site is the heading: Spending For Peace Vs Spending For War. And, in that section is revealed:

The United Nations and all its agencies and funds spend about $30 billion each year, or about $4 for each of the world’s inhabitants. This is a very small sum compared to most government budgets and it is less than three percent of the world’s military spending. Yet for nearly two decades, the UN has faced financial difficulties and it has been forced to cut back on important programs in all areas, even as new mandates have arisen. Many member states have not paid their full dues and have cut their donations to the UN’s voluntary funds. As of October 31, 2009, members’ arrears to the Regular Budget topped $829 million, of which the US owed 93%.

    Indeed; why are we cynical?

  2. Hi thomas,
Once again thanks for bothering to comment.
Is the economy leading to war? In some ways, I agree. But I also think too much of our economy is based on military/industrial/university research complex. Have these "industries" gotten WAY TOO BIG To FAIL.
The fear of more job losses is used by this "industry" in the same way sometimes as Big Oil, Car Manufacturing, and even the justification for outsourcing. That dollar a day is better than what they were given you know.
Now add the element of "fear" of the "enemy".

I should never have watch the movie: Eraser, http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116213/.

Oh well, I am not a cynic at all either.

  4. We may have to go to Cynics Anonymous (CA). Hmmm OK, I will vouch for you if....

Seriously, I have considered the cost of cutting military spending and I wonder if it would help or if it would make matters worse. How many would lose jobs while spending for weapons and other toys went right along. Still there are those people who are employed to make the toys or weapons.. I know, I should be more polite.

Kanna, Continue to write and rant as much as you want and I will continue to read and marvel.. and occasionally get a little cynical or even yell at these morons from my little cell....

  5. Thomas,
I am having a hard time keeping it at "a little cynical" these days.
I don't even have a voice left from shouting and ranting.
Thanks for the advice here, CA, but would it really help? May be CA is another stupid idea.
